Einstein once said,

We owe a lot to the Indians who taught us how to count without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made

Such is the greatness of our nation that many of the advances in the sciences that the world considers today to have been made in Europe were in fact made in India centuries ago.

Today, I am going to share some of the most interesting facts about India that will take you by surprise. so, lets begin

1.) Samosas, the much-loved Indian snack, are banned in Somalia.

The snack has a triangular shape which seemed to be a symbol of Christianity to ‘Al-Shabaab group’. The shape didn’t go well with the group, as they thought it resembles the Christian Holy Trinity and so they banned Samosa in Somalia in the year 2011.

2.) Kumbh Mela is the World’s Largest Gathering of People

The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2013, a 55 day gathering drew around 30 million to 80 million people. In fact, the gathering was so large that it was visible from space .

3.) India has one of the largest postal networks in the World and what’s more, there’s a floating post office too!

India has the largest Postal Network in​ the world with over 1, 54,882 Post Offices (as on 31.03.2014) of which 1, 39,182 (89.86%) are in the rural areas.On an average, a Post Office serves an area of 21.22 Sq. Km and a population of 8221 people.

You won’t believe that there’s even a floating post office in Dal Lake in Kashmir. It was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in August 2011 and since then has been a major attraction for tourists.More than seven thousand people use this post office every year and it’s still going strong!

4.) The first rocket in India was transported on a cycle

In 1963 Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched its first rocket from Thumba Equatorial Launching Station.

The station had a single launch pad in the midst of coconut plantations. A local Catholic Church the St Mary Magadelene’s Church served as the main office for the scientists. A Cattle shed became the laboratory in which young Indian scientists like Abdul Kalam Azad worked and the rocket was transported to lift-off pad on a bicycle. The second rocket, which was launched sometime later, was a little bigger and heavier and it was transported in a bullock cart for the lift off.

5.) Home to the world’s biggest family: The man with 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren

Ziona Chan is head of the world’s biggest family – and says he is ‘blessed’  to have his 39 wives. Ziona Chana also has 94 children, 14-daughters-in-law and 33 grandchildren. It takes 30 whole chickens just to make dinner.

They live in a 100-room, four storey house set amidst the hills of Baktwang village in the Indian state of Mizoram, where the wives sleep in giant communal dormitories.
